Analysis of Appraising Agricultural Intangible Asset Value by Cost Method AgEcon
Li, Xiao-Juan.
On the basis of describing the connotation of agricultural intangible asset and cost method, the technical ideas of appraising by cost method are introduced. The article analyzes the advantages (simple appraisal principle and easy to understand and grasp; overall consideration of various factors related to appraisal result value) and disadvantages (high appraisal cost; difficult to appraise and grasp various appraisal factors) of appraising by cost method. The article also summarizes the precondition of appraising by cost method: it is applicable to appraise the agricultural intangible asset which can be reproduced and afresh developed. Based on the cognition of agricultural intangible asset and the relevant rules of Ministry of Finance on appraisal of...

Assessing the Opportunity Cost of Growing a Bioenergy Crop in California: a PMP Approach AgEcon
Yi, Fujin; Merel, Pierre R.; Lee, Juhwan; Six, Johan.
A significant increase in demand for fuel ethanol in California should be expected if all gasoline sold in the state were to be blended with 10% ethanol, as envisaged in the State Alternative Fuels Plan. This paper assesses the potential of California agriculture to supply biofuel feedstock in the form of switchgrass. We construct a fully calibrated, multi-region, multi-input and multi-output model of agricultural supply for California’s Central Valley based on the principles of Positive Mathematical Programming. We exploit the biogeochemical model DAYCENT to estimate production functions for switchgrass in each agricultural region. We then predict the extent and location of potential switchgrass production in the Central Valley. Our results suggest that...

Derivation of supply curves for catchment water effluents meeting specific salinity concentration targets in 2050: linking farm and catchment level models or “Footprints on future salt / water planes” AgEcon
Nordblom, Thomas L.; Bathgate, Andrew D.; Young, Robert A..
The salt burden in a stream reflects the blend of salty and fresh flows from different soil areas in its catchment. Depending not only on long-run rainfall, water yields from a soil are also determined by land cover: lowest if the area is forested and greatest if cleared. Water yields under agro-forestry, lucerne pasture, perennial grass pasture, and annual pasture or cropping options span the range of water yields between the extremes of forested and cleared lands. This study explores quantitative approaches for connecting the hydrologic and economic consequences of farm-level decisions on land cover (productive land uses) to the costs of attaining different catchment level targets of water volumes and salt reaching downstream users; environmental,...

More water for everything? The problem of bogus water savings in northern Victoria, Australia AgEcon
Gyles, Oliver.
The Victorian Department of Sustainability and Environment (DSE) spent the latter decades of the 20th century fully integrating the surface and sub-surface drainage systems with the water distribution network in northern Victoria, thereby enabling complete recycling of outfalls, leaks and seepage from its channels. Yet in 2007, in repudiation of this recycling capacity, DSE announced a multibillion dollar modernisation project it claims will “create” 450 GL of “new water” by reducing “inefficiencies” in the channel distribution system. Examination of the northern Victorian irrigation supply system shows it was fully integrated with more than adequate recycling capacity before the project began. In a classic case of double counting, DSE was already...

Questions of Costs About the French Bio-Fuel Sector by Year 2010 AgEcon
Treguer, David; Sourie, Jean-Claude; Rozakis, Stelios.
By the end of year 2010, each member state of the European Union (the EU) ought to incorporate 5.75% of bio-fuels in the total of fuels used for transportation purposes. In order to achieve such a target, tax incentives are implemented by the French government given that the production of bio-fuels still remains unprofitable, even if oil prices are about $60/barel. After a brief introduction (1), we will first demonstrate the importance borne by the cost of agricultural raw material in the total cost of biofuels (2). For this purpose a sequential multi annual LP model is used (3). Emphasis must be placed on the possible competition between food and energy crops, should the production of energy crops require land exceeding the mandatory 10% set-aside (4)....

Response to Out of Stock Produce and its Underlying Economic Considerations AgEcon
Penn, Jerrod; Matopoulos, Aristides; House, Lisa.
The goal of this research is to investigate consumer response to out-of-stock product in the produce category. We do this by comparing results from a survey conducted in Greece and the United States to previous research on consumer response to out-of-stock situations for other perishable and non-perishable products. We further examined the underlying economic reasoning as well as the cultural and physical differences between the United States and Greece as explanations of different reactions. Out of Stock produce response proved different in produce than in other perishables and non-perishables. There is some evidence that produce does follow previous the suggested economic reasoning from the previous research, especially within transaction costs. Finally,...

Social Cost-Benefit Analysis of Scientific Versus Traditional Shrimp Farming: A Case Study from India AgEcon
Bhattacharya, Poulomi; Ninan, K.N..
This paper attempts a social cost-benefit analysis of scientific versus traditional shrimp farming in West Bengal, India. Using primary data, the paper shows that although intensive or scientific shrimp farming yields high returns as compared to traditional shrimp farming, when the opportunity costs and environmental costs of shrimp farming including disease risk are accounted for, scientific shrimp farming loses its advantage. In fact sensitivity analysis shows that if expected benefits were to fall short by 15% and costs rise by a similar proportion, scientific shrimp farmers report higher losses than traditional shrimp farmers. But large traditional shrimp farmers continue to report positive net returns. These results are also most pronounced for small...

The Orangutan-oil Palm Conflict: Economic Constraints and Opportunities for Conservation AgEcon
Swarna Nantha, Hemanath; Tisdell, Clement A..
The future of the orangutan (Pongo spp.) is far from secure despite the species’ high profile and media attention. The traditional threat to the orangutan has been widespread logging, but the continuing conversion of remaining habitat for oil palm (Elaeis guineensis) cultivation is hastening its extinction in the wild. This situation is driven by a robust global market for palm oil as a vegetable oil and biofuel. In tackling this conservation problem, therefore, economic factors cannot be overlooked. This article analyses these factors and how they curtail effective orangutan conservation. Of significance are the high opportunity costs of orangutan conservation and market failures associated with the public-goods nature of the orangutan’s forest habitat....
